Choriev’s life and work
Ruzi Choriev was born in 1931 in Poshhurd, a mountain village in Surkhandarya Province. His orphaned parents were raised in orphanages. Ruzi Choriev studied at the Benkov Art School in 1959 with G.Akbalian, V.Petrov and other master craftsmen. 1965 Graduated from the Art Academy of the USSR, Repin in Leningrad, the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. From 1966 to 1973 he was a teacher at Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute named after Nizami. In 1967 he was awarded the Youth Committee of Uzbekistan. In 1969, a personal exhibition was shown in Tashkent. The solo exhibition was opened in Termez in 1971. In 1975 he was awarded the title “Honored Art Worker of Uzbekistan”. He participated in all exhibitions held in Uzbekistan and abroad in 1963-2004. In 1982 a personal exhibition was shown in Tashkent and regions of Uzbekistan. He was awarded the Hamza State Prize in 1983 for the series of works “Surkhandarya land and his people”. In 1987 he was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Uzbekistan. In 1990 he was the artistic director of the Republican Youth Creativity Center. In 1998 he was awarded the “El-yurt hurmati” order. In autumn 2000, an artist’s exhibition took place in Istanbul, Turkey. At the time of the exhibition there were a number of works of the artist, such as “Gulf”, “The Secret of the Sea”, “The Shore”. He died on February 18, 2004. In 2007, at the National Arts Center in Tashkent, at the initiative of the Forum of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan Foundation, the People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Ruzi Choriev’s exhibition was held.
